"It'll put hair on your chest"...that's what my dad would say when I was little to get me to eat something that seemed less than desirable, which wasn't uncommon in our house. My dad was, has been, and is known to provide a number of "wild game" on the dinner table. Do you want me to name a few? ...deer, quail, turkey, duck, rabbit, pheasant, ...it gets worse...possom, chitlin's (do you want to know what that is??) I'm certain the list goes on, but my memory has thankfully repressed some of my less fond childhood experiences.
Of course by now we all catch ourselves repeating those famous quips we heard from our parents. Well, this one was no exception. Last night we had a lovely meal of grilled venison, a nice tossed salad and cheese grits on the side. We are quite used to turned up noses at our table, and last night was no exception. Not to the deer meat, but the yummy cheese grits of all things! So out it rolled..."eat it Gabe, it'll put hair on your chest!" No sooner than those big brown eyes shot over to his Dad's general chest region did he scarf down those grits as if they were laced with pure sugar! And he asked for seconds! Well guess what? Today after school, I found him shirtless, with chin to chest looking down and stroking with one finger mid-chest. "Look mama...I am getting some chest hair!" Then he shouted for Daddy and turned to the get in direct light so that we too could marvel at his peach fuzz!
As I looked closer, he suggested I get my glasses! I ran with it! ...I wonder how much mileage I can get out of this one...brussel sprouts, liver??? Oh, and guess what he wanted for dinner tonight, and lots of it.....cheese grits!
